Connect to the UMW VPN with FortiClient
Use the UMWRA VPN profile to securely access approved UMW internal resources while working off campus.
What you need
- An approved UMW VPN request. Open the VPN Access Request Form.
- FortiClient installed and configured by UMW IT. UMW transitioned VPN users to FortiClient as its VPN software.
- A working UMW NetID, password, and Duo enrollment.
- An active internet connection.
Do you need VPN? Common examples include Banner INB, shared network folders, Banner reporting through Report Central, and other specialized secure systems. Banner SSB, Canvas, MyUMW, OWA, Office 365, and many other services generally do not require VPN.
Connect using FortiClient
-
Connect to the internet
Use a reliable home, workplace, or other trusted internet connection before launching FortiClient.
-
Open FortiClient
On Windows, open FortiClient from the Start menu or select the FortiClient icon in the system tray. On macOS, open FortiClient from Applications.
-
Open Remote Access
Select Remote Access. FortiClient displays the VPN connections available on your device.
-
Select UMWRA
Choose the UMWRA profile supplied by UMW IT, then select Connect. If UMWRA is missing, contact the Help Desk rather than creating a new profile.

Enter your UMW NetID username and password when prompted. FortiClient may also request a certificate or display a connection disclaimer, depending on the configuration.
-
Approve the Duo prompt
Complete the Duo two-factor authentication prompt on your enrolled device. Never approve a Duo request you did not initiate.
-
Confirm the connection
Connected
FortiClient should show the connection status and session duration. You can now access approved UMW internal resources.
Disconnect when finished
Return to FortiClient’s Remote Access screen and select Disconnect. You can also right-click the FortiClient icon in the system tray and choose the active VPN connection.
