Maintenance to IT systems 12/28 and 12/31-1/2

Information Technologies will be performing maintenance to systems over the upcoming Winter Break.  This is traditionally a time when demand for systems is lower, reducing the risk that faculty, staff, and students will be inconvenienced by the outages/disruptions this work will cause. Reminder about using the university network drives

UMW provides shared servers where individuals and departments can share files for network retrieval. Most UMW employees will automatically have access to the common shared space (New-Shares), as well as to the space that is shared by your department (for example, Mathematics).  Please take a moment to read the information as a refresher about each of these two drives below. “New Share” The “New Share”, commonly referred to as the U-drive, is open to all UMW employees.  All university employees can view documents in this folder.  Documents and forms that all university employees need access to can be placed here.  Individual documents should not be placed in this drive.  Users should not delete content on this drive that is not their own. Welcome to our newest employees

From left to right: Suzan Mastin, Shaun Melendy, Samantha Bergeron Suzan Mastin joined the UMW community in July as the Executive Administrative Assistant within the Information Technologies Division.  Suzan comes with a background and experience in the field of education as well as technology having taught in the public schools system followed by an IT career with the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) as a Senior Quality Management Specialist for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. As the Executive Administrative Assistant to the CIO, Suzan is responsible for the management and oversight of the office functions of the CIO and acts as a liaison between the CIO’s office and the campus community in regards to IT initiatives. Internet Explorer Vulnerability

The following is information pertinent to our users from Commonwealth Security and Risk Management: CSRM has been monitoring a recently announced unpatched vulnerability in Internet Explorer that is being actively exploited.  The exploit allows an attacker to infect an user using a malicious website that has been specifically crafted to take advantage of this vulnerability.  When the user visits the site, the malware is downloaded to their PC.  The malware is then installed the next time the user logs into their system. The vulnerability affects Internet Explorer versions 6 – 9.  Microsoft has not released a patch for this vulnerability, however, they have released a security advisory with several workarounds that can be used until a patch can be released.  Users should consider using a different web browser if possible.  The workaround identified in the Microsoft security advisory are as follows: Deploy the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit Set Internet and Local … [Read more...]

New wireless option

We are pleased to announce a change to wireless network access intended to make connecting to guest access easier for internal users.  Available later today, we have created a “UMW” SSID which will provide guest access to internal users by using your NETID and password.  UMW users who choose to use guest wireless can do so without completing the registration process by selecting the “UMW” network. It is important to note that guest wireless is not encrypted and does not provide access to the internal network.  This means that users will still need to use UMW-Secured to access Banner INB, Shared Drives, Exchange, and other services. EagleNet/SharePoint maintenance – 8/9-8/13

EagleNet will undergo maintenance from Thursday, August 9 at 6:00 pm through Monday, August 13 at 8:00 am.  During this time, users are asked not to use EagleNet including: Department sites, MySites, and the UMW Reporting Center. Banner SSB will remain accessible at: https://banner.umw.edu. This maintenance is intended to resolve performance issues with EagleNet that resulted in several downtimes earlier this summer.  As part of this process, SharePoint MySites will be eliminated for those individuals who have not utilized them. UMW IT System Downtime Report

The issues with on-campus UMW-Secured wireless access have been resolved. UMW-Secured is available again for use. If you are an Apple iOS or MacOS user, you will need an updated configuration file to use UMW-Secured. You can contact the Help Desk for assistance with installing the configuration file. The Help Desk will open at 8:00AM Monday morning, and can be reached at (540) 654-2255 or helpdesk@umw.edu.
