Recently, in order to increase the security and performance of the UMW website, we made some changes to the way logins are handled.\u00a0For the time being,\u00a0you will need to be either on-campus, or logged into VPN<\/a> in order to login to the website.<\/p>\n

Why?<\/h2>\n

Large-scale attacks are attempted against\u00a0our website on a regular basis. These attacks are known as “brute force attacks<\/a>“, through which hackers attempt to login to the website over and over again; hundreds of times each minute. In doing so, they have a limited potential of being able to successfully login to the website and gain access to perform administrative tasks. At the same time, even if they are unsuccessful in every attempt to login, they are still having a major effect on the performance of the website by forcing it to evaluate their login credentials\u00a0each time they attempt to login.<\/p>\n

In order to avoid these attacks, we have restricted access to the administration area of the website so that it can only be loaded from within the campus network. Any attempt to access the login form from outside of the network will result in an error message.<\/p>\n

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is an important step in protecting the website against potential security breaches, and to help\u00a0provide the best performance available through the website.<\/p>\n

What Should You Do?<\/h2>\n

If you are working on campus, you should have no problems logging into the site. However, if you are attempting to login to the website from off-campus, you will need to login to VPN first<\/a>.\u00a0You should be able to login to VPN on your Windows computer, your Mac or your iPad\/iPhone with very little trouble.\u00a0If you are not\u00a0sure how to login to VPN, or you experience any issues in doing so, you should be able to work with the Help Desk<\/a> in order to gain access.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

However, as we’ve continued to add new content to the site, and kept up with updates to the software, we’ve found that the EPS plugin is causing quite a few problems on the site. If we remove the plugin while it is still being used, any page that’s using the EPS plugin will stop working altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if you see a box similar to the ones shown above, please check your site to see if you are using any slideshows (usually, these slideshows are only being used on the home pages of most sites, but there are a handful that are using slideshows on inner pages). If you don’t see any slideshows on your site, please <a href=\"mailto:webmaster@umw.edu\">send us an email<\/a> with the address of your website letting us know that you’re not using the Easy Page Slideshow plugin, and we’ll deactivate it on your site. While the way you accomplish your normal tasks will remain unchanged, the appearance of the administrative area will change fairly significantly. width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The editor doesn’t load properly because of a plugin called Easy Page Slideshow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When you’re trying to edit a page on your site, occasionally, you might not be able to actually edit it. Instead, the editor window will be blank, your toolbar will be missing, and, if you scroll down the page a little bit, you’ll probably notice that much of the rest of the editor page is missing, too.<\/p>\n<p>More than likely, one of the most recent things someone did while editing this page, was to upload a PDF or Word document to attach to the page.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, the original plugin we used to create slideshows within the site, Easy Page Slideshow, attempts to process those PDF documents as images; when it can’t figure out how to create a thumbnail of the PDF, it stops loading the editor page altogether.<\/p>\n<p>The quickest way to solve the issue is to delete attachments one-by-one until the editor starts working again. To do so, you can click “Delete Image” in the “Slideshow” box below the editor. When you do so, the attachment will be deleted from the server and the editor page will reload. If the editor still doesn’t work properly after deleting the first attachment, delete each additional attachment until it does start working. Once the editor starts working, you should remove any old attachments that are no longer being used in the page (for instance, old versions of a form, duplicate copies of an image or form, etc.). Then, upload any missing attachments that are still necessary.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Once you’ve gotten things working properly again, the long-term fix is to remove the Easy Page Slideshow plugin. However, if you’re actually using that plugin to display slideshows on your site, you’ll need to remove those slideshows and replace them with a different kind of slideshow before we can deactivate the plugin. Otherwise, our theme was built in such a way that the pages that display the slideshows themselves (in many cases, your home pages) will stop working once we deactivate the plugin.<\/p>\n<p>There are a handful of options to replace your slideshow.<\/p>\n<h2>JetPack Slideshow<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/magazine.umw.edu\/summer2013\/departments\/student-research\/training-teachers-for-city-lessons\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12421\" alt=\"JetPack Slideshow\" src=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/jetpack-slideshow.jpg\" width=\"714\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/jetpack-slideshow.jpg 714w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/jetpack-slideshow-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/jetpack-slideshow-140x90.jpg 140w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/jetpack-slideshow-690x450.jpg 690w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/jetpack-slideshow-465x303.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plugin that we mainly use to show how many people are visiting and interacting with your site, JetPack, also has a slideshow feature built in. This is the simplest to implement, but it’s also the least flexible. To turn on <a href=\"http:\/\/jetpack.me\/support\/shortcode-embeds\/\">the JetPack slideshow feature,<\/a> you should be able to click the JetPack menu item in your admin menu, then make sure that the “Shortcode Embeds” is active; this module also provides quite a few other new ways to embed different types of media in your pages and posts. With JetPack, as long as it says it is “Connected to WordPress.com” at the top, if you don’t see a blue “Activate” button within a module, that means it is already activated (the inactive modules will also be more faded than the active modules).<\/p>\n<p>To use the JetPack slideshow, simply click the “Add Media” button above the editor and then click “Create Gallery”. Then, upload the photos you would like to use in the slideshow, click the blue “Create a New Gallery” button in the bottom right, choose “Slideshow” from the “Type” selector (you should also choose “Media File” in the “Link to” selector) and insert the gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The JetPack slideshow only has one option (and that option applies throughout your entire site): should it have a white background or a black background. The advantages of this slideshow are that you can insert it into any page on your site, and that it’s extremely easy to choose your images and insert the slideshow; it is an extended feature of the built-in Gallery feature in WordPress. You can see an <a href=\"http:\/\/magazine.umw.edu\/summer2013\/departments\/student-research\/training-teachers-for-city-lessons\/\">example of the JetPack slideshow in action<\/a> in the Summer 2013 edition of the online magazine.<\/p>\n<h2>Featured Posts<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12441\" alt=\"Featured Posts Sample\" src=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/featured-posts1.png\" width=\"717\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/featured-posts1.png 717w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/featured-posts1-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/featured-posts1-690x320.png 690w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/featured-posts1-465x215.png 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The next option you have for a slideshow is the “Featured Posts” plugin. This plugin can only be used once on your site. To use this plugin, look for the “DisplayBuddy” menu near the bottom of your administration menu.\u00a0It displays the title, excerpt and featured image from content items within your site, so you will need to make sure you have a set of content items to use within the slideshow (news posts, etc.). When you hover over the DisplayBuddy menu, click on “Featured Posts” to configure the options for the plugin.<\/p>\n<p>There are quite a few slightly different layouts for the slideshow from which you can choose. I would recommend testing each one thoroughly before making a final decision. There are two layouts that have been customized specifically to work within our theme: the Umw-magazine2-layout and Umw-news-layout.<\/p>\n<p>Once you choose a layout, you can specify the dimensions of the slideshow itself. There are four options for the dimensions: “Entity Width” and “Entity Height”, which determine how large the actual slideshow will be; and “Image Width” and “Image Height”, which determine what size the images will be within the slideshow. If you are using a layout that places the caption to the left or right of the image, you should make sure that the Entity Height and Image Height are the same, and that the Entity Width is larger than the Image Width; if you are using a layout that places the caption above and\/or below the image, you should make sure the Entity Width and Image Width are the same, and that the Entity Height is taller than the Image Height.<\/p>\n<p>After you set up the slideshow dimensions, you will determine what actually goes in the slideshow and how it behaves.<\/p>\n<p>Once the slideshow is set up, you can either insert the [[featuredposts]] shortcode within a page or post, or you can use the FeaturedPosts widget into an appropriate widget area. You can see an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/\">example of the FeaturedPosts slideshow in action<\/a> on the front page of the UMW News site.<\/p>\n<h2>SlideDeck2<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/magazine.umw.edu\/spring2013\/cover-story\/reinventing-ramen\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12451\" alt=\"SlideDeck2 Sample\" src=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/slidedeck.jpg\" width=\"613\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/slidedeck.jpg 613w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/slidedeck-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/08\/slidedeck-465x313.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SlideDeck2 is the most flexible of all of the slideshow plugins used on the UMW website, but is also the most difficult to set up. We are still working on putting together some custom layouts that work well within the UMW theme, but, as with the FeaturedPosts plugin, there are quite a few to choose from already; you’ll just need to test them thoroughly to see if they do what you want.<\/p>\n<p>To set up SlideDeck, you’ll need to make sure the plugin is active on your site. If it’s not, please let us know (or, if you have the ability to activate plugins on your site, go ahead and activate “SlideDeck2 Personal”, then activate “SlideDeck2 – Developer Addon Package” and “SlideDeck2 – Professional Addon Package”.<\/p>\n<p>Once SlideDeck2 and its add-ons are active, you should see a “SlideDeck 2” menu in your administration menu. From there, you can set up a new slideshow using a number of different sources. SlideDeck supports creating slideshows from RSS feeds, YouTube and Vimeo videos, Facebook Pages, local WordPress posts, specific images and more.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have your slideshow set up, you can insert it into a page or post by using the appropriate shortcode provided to you when you saved the slideshow, or you can drag the SlideDeck2 widget into an appropriate widget area. plugins during the week of July 4<\/a>. After that update was completed, we began to receive reports that strange issues were occurring with navigation menus on various sites. Eventually, we tracked the issue down to a change that was made within Genesis, the “parent theme” used as a base to the UMW website theme. Basically, the option to enable\/disable the primary and secondary navigation menus was removed in a recent version of Genesis. Normally, with Genesis, regardless of those settings, if you want a menu to appear in either of those spots, you have to create a custom menu within Appearance -> Menus. However, within the UMW theme, if you had either of those settings enabled, and you didn’t have a custom menu created, the system would automatically generate a menu based on your page hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p>Since those options were not used within Genesis itself, they were removed. However, the values for those options were only removed after something triggered a change to the settings on the Genesis -> Theme Settings page, which is why no one noticed the issue immediately after the update.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we updated the UMW theme to <strong>reinstate those options<\/strong>. If you need to enable or disable your navigation menus, either the left-hand navigation menu or the gray bar at the top, you can go into <strong>Genesis -> Theme Settings<\/strong> and adjust the two options in the “UMW Navigation” box.<\/p>\n<p>If you previously took our <a href=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/2013\/07\/19\/recent-theme-changes\/\">recommended steps to add or remove the menus<\/a>, you might need to undo those changes in order to be able to use these settings appropriately.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As some of you know, we updated WordPress, our theme, and all available plugins during the week of July 4. As part of that update, the authors of Genesis removed the option to enable and disable the Primary and Secondary Navigation menus. The UMW website theme used the Secondary Navigation Menu option to determine whether or not to display the gray menu bar at the top of certain sites.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of this change, we had to remove the dependency on that option.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12291\" style=\"width: 219px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/07\/nav-menu-selector.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12291\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12291\" alt=\"Set the blank\/empty menu to the "Secondary Navigation Menu" slot\" src=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/07\/nav-menu-selector-209x300.png\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/07\/nav-menu-selector-209x300.png 209w, https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/wordpress101\/files\/2013\/07\/nav-menu-selector.png 307w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Set the blank\/empty menu to the “Secondary Navigation Menu” slot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Therefore, many site owners may now be seeing a large, ugly gray menu bar at the top of their sites with all of their pages listed. If this is the case, you can solve this issue fairly easily. To do so, please go to Appearance -> Menus in your administration area. Then, create a new menu and leave it empty (don’t add any links to it). Once you’ve saved the new, empty menu, choose that menu from the “Secondary Navigation Menu” dropdown box (<strong>EDIT:<\/strong> Make sure you choose it from the “Secondary Navigation Menu” box, not the “UMW Secondary Navigation Menu” box) on the left side of the page and click the “Save” button. Once you do so, the gray menu bar will be removed from your site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> We recently noticed that this change to Genesis affected the navigation menus on the left side of some sites. If you are noticing a new menu appearing on the left side of your pages, and you want to get rid of it, the simplest solution is probably to go to Genesis -> Theme Settings and click on the thumbnail that says “No Nav” in the “Default Layout” section of that page. Then, save the changes to your settings. That should remove the left navigation menu from all pages that are set to use the default layout. Instead of showing a list of your latest tweets, they are most likely displaying some sort of error message.<\/p>\n<p>This issue is due to the fact that Twitter recently removed support for the “application programming interface” (API – an interface set up to allow websites and applications to communicate with Twitter) that was used by all of the old Twitter widgets. There is a fairly simple solution, but it will take a bit of work on your part.
