Genesis Responsive Slider allows you to build a slideshow out of posts within your website, but it can offer a lot more than that.

If you’d like to build a slideshow out of your normal posts, you can easily do so. However, if you’d like to build a completely custom slideshow, which isn’t tied to any of the existing content on your site, you should probably start by creating a custom post type, just for the slides.

Creating the “Home Page Slides” Post Type

If you already see “Home Page Slides” in your administration menu, you can skip this step. To import the configuration into your site, the Types plugin will need to be active. You have quite a few different options here, all of which determine what type of information will be included in the slideshow.

Do not link Slider image to Post/Page – If you check this box, clicking on a slide will do nothing. If you leave it unchecked, clicking on the slide will take you to the original piece of content from which the slide was pulled.

Display Post/Page Title in Slider – If you check this box, the Title that you give to the piece of content will appear in the caption area for the slide; if you leave it unchecked, the title will not be displayed at all.

Display Content in Slider – If you leave this box checked, the content of the original post will be displayed in the caption area of the slide; if you uncheck the box, that content will not appear on the slide. If you leave the second box unchecked, and you uncheck this box, no caption will appear with the slide at all.

Hide Title & Content on Mobile Devices – If you leave this box checked, the caption area (if applicable) will not appear on devices with small screens.

Select one of the following – If you have the third box checked (to show the post content in the slider), this is where you would determine what shows up as the caption. You can choose to show the post excerpt (which will either be a truncated version of the full content, or will be the manual post excerpt, if set); or, you can show the full content of the post.

More Text (if applicable) – Use this to specify what text you want to display at the end of any shortened excerpts/content within the slideshow. If you are not showing the content of the post in the slider, this will have no effect. If you are showing the full, non-truncated content of the post, this will not appear, either.

Limit content to XXXXX characters – If you are showing the post content on the slides, you can shorten that content to a maximum number of characters (letters, numbers & spaces).

Slider Excerpt Width (in percentage) – If you are showing a caption on the slides, you can specify how much of the total slide width you want the caption to take.

Excerpt Location (vertical) – Here, you can specify whether you want the caption to appear at the top of the slide or the bottom.

Excerpt Location (horizontal) – Here, you can specify whether you want the excerpt to appear at the left edge of the slide or the right edge.

Creating New Slides

Once you have the slider set up, you can begin creating content to populate your slideshow. Whether you’re using standard posts or the custom “Home Page Slides” content type, the process is basically the same; it’s also essentially the same as creating any piece of content.

Some things to keep in mind when creating content for slides:

Be sure to set a “Featured Image” for the content. That featured image will be used as the image in the slideshow. As such, you should also make sure that the image is at least as large as the “maximum” width/height of the slideshow.

If you are displaying titles in your slideshow, keep the titles of your content short. The longer the title, the more room it’s going to take up in the caption area (potentially leaving little-to-no room for the content, if applicable).

If you are displaying content in your slideshow, and you don’t want that content to get cut off or overrun the caption area, you’ll need to keep it very succinct.

If you would like your slides to link somewhere other than the original piece of content, you can potentially use the “Page Links To” area to redirect that piece of content somewhere else.

If you would like to add a slideshow to your page, one of your options is “Genesis Responsive Slider”. However, there is some initial setup that needs to take place before that information will be displayed on your site.

To begin with, you will need to login to your account on Twitter and create a new widget within your Twitter profile. You can leave the height set to the default, and you can leave it set to use the “Light” theme. There are a number of options you can modify while setting up the new Twitter widget.

Type of Widget – You can choose to set up any of the following types of widgets:

Profile – This will show the latest tweets from a specific user (your user account, by default)

Favorites – A list of the tweets that have been “favorited” by a specific user

List – A list of latest tweets within a specific Twitter List that you’re following or that you have set up

Search – A list of tweets that match specific search criteria

Using the Profile widget, you can set the following options:

Username – the Twitter handle of the user whose tweets you would like to display (yours, by default)

Exclude replies – exclude any tweets that begin with the “@” symbol (which are usually individual replies to other users)

Auto-expand photos – Twitter will attempt to display any photos that are included within each tweet. If this option is disabled, the links will appear by themselves without the photo showing up under the tweet

Height – defaults to 600px tall. You can set this to any desired height, but the default height should be sufficient for most situations

Theme – a choice between a “Light” theme and a “Dark” theme; the “Light” theme should work best on most UMW websites

Link color – defaults to “blue”. On the UMW website, we use the color “#2255aa” for all links within content, so you may want to set it to that value

Using the Favorites widget or the List widget, you have the same options listed above, with the exception of the “Exclude replies” option (replies will be included, since the entire widget will be displaying a curated list of tweets)

Using the Search widget, you have the following options, in addition to the options you have for the other 3 widgets:

Search Query – you can enter any supported Twitter search query here. If you test a search query using the Twitter Advanced Search, you can copy that query (including the boolean “OR” and “AND” operators, location operators like “WITHIN”, date operators, etc.) into this box to tailor the search results

Only show top Tweets – will narrow the results of the search so that only popular tweets are displayed

Safe Search – excludes any tweets that Twitter programmatically determines might be inappropriate (profanity, sexual content, etc.)

Once you have configured your Twitter widget within your Twitter profile, you will receive a “Widget ID”. From there, you can go to Appearance -> Widgets and drag the “Twitter (JetPack)” widget into the appropriate place in your sidebars. If you do not see the “Twitter (JetPack)” widget available in your list of widgets, please let us know and we will activate the JetPack plugin on your site. Once you have dragged the widget into your sidebar, you can set a few other options for the widget, then check it out on your site.

When you set up your widget within your Twitter profile, you will be provided with some HTML code that you would normally copy and paste into your site. However, for security reasons, you cannot simply copy and paste that whole HTML snippet into a widget on your site. Instead, you’ll need to use the Twitter (JetPack) widget, and just paste in the relevant information. The main piece of information you’ll need is the “Widget ID”. To do so, login to your site’s administrative area and click Users -> Add New in the left menu. Begin typing the user’s Banner username (netID) into the “E-mail or username” box under the “Add Existing User” heading. If the user already exists within the system, their username and email address should appear in an “auto-complete” box below the text field in which you’re typing. The “Next Month” link will only appear if the selected calendars actually have at least one event scheduled in the upcoming month.

List of Events – This will display a bullet list of events, where each event has its own heading.

Grouped list – This will display a bullet list of events, where the events are grouped under common headings for each date.

Maximum no. of events to display – If you would like to limit the number of events that are displayed within the widget, enter a number in this field. If the field is set to 0, the widget will display the full list of events that are retrieved from the calendar.

Display title on tooltip/list item? – When you choose one of the “calendar” display options, hovering over a date will display a “tooltip” (or pop-up type of box) listing all of the events scheduled on that day. If you would like that pop-up to have a title (such as “Events on March 7” or something similar), enter the text you would like to appear before the appropriate date (e.g., in the previous example, “March 7” would be automatically displayed, so you would just enter “Events on” in the box). If you are using the “List of Events” widget, you can choose to display a title above each event. If you are using the “Grouped list” type of widget, a title will be displayed regardless of your selection here.

Google Calendar Events Shortcode Example

Inserting a Calendar/List of Events in a Page or Post

If you would prefer to have a calendar or list of events displayed within the content of a specific page or post, you can easily do that, as well. To begin, simply create a new page or post, or edit an existing page or post. Then, place your cursor in the editor where you would like the calendar to be inserted. Click the “Insert a Calendar” icon in the editor toolbar (it is in the third row of buttons on the toolbar – if you only see one row of buttons, you will need to click the “Show/Hide Kitchen Sink” button near the end of the first row of buttons – or press Alt+Shift+Z on your keyboard).

When you click the “Insert a Calendar” button, a window will appear over top of the editor allowing you to configure the calendar being inserted.

The first screen you see will have a full list of the available calendars.
