Verifying your identity using a <strong>second factor<\/strong> (like your phone or other mobile device) prevents anyone but you from logging in, even if they know your password.<\/p>\n<h2 data-localize=\"guide-index\">How it works<\/h2>\n<p data-localize=\"guide-index\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/guide.duo.com\/static\/images\/en\/how-it-works_2x.png\" alt=\"Three steps to stronger authentication\" width=\"50%\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enter username and password as usual<\/li>\n<li>Use your registered device to verify your identity<\/li>\n<li>Securely logged in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-localize=\"guide-index\">Why do I need this?<\/h2>\n<p data-localize=\"guide-index\">Passwords are increasingly easy to compromise. They can often be stolen, guessed, or hacked \u2014 you might not even know someone is accessing your account.<\/p>\n<p data-localize=\"guide-index\"><strong>Two-factor authentication<\/strong> adds a second layer of security, keeping your account secure even if your password is compromised. With Duo Push, you&#8217;ll be alerted right away (on your phone) if someone is trying to log in as you.<\/p>\n<p data-localize=\"guide-index\">This second factor of authentication is separate and independent from your username and password \u2014 <b>Duo never sees your password<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2>What methods can I use as my second factor?<\/h2>\n<p data-localize=\"guide-index\">Once you&#8217;ve enrolled in Duo you&#8217;re ready to go: You&#8217;ll login as usual with your username and password, and then use your device to verify that it&#8217;s you. See the full schedule below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each residence hall will receive a notification when their building is scheduled for the service upgrade, as installers will need to replace access points in hallways and rooms. Residents do not need to be in the building during the installation, and due to the possibility of intermittent outages, we recommend accessing internet elsewhere during the date of the installation in each building.<\/p>\n<p>The installation will typically take place Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and contractors will be accompanied by UMW staff. When notified that their building is next on the schedule, students should clear the area around the access point if one is located in their room. Wireless and wired internet will be unavailable in those spaces during the on-site installation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Upon completion of the installation of the new MyResNet in each residence hall, students will need to create a login via the new portal to access the upgraded service. Single sign-on will be available, so students can use their umw.edu NetID.<\/strong> In addition, the Apogee wireless network will available to residential students outside of the residence halls. An annual authentication will be required using single sign-on.<\/p>\n<p>A guest portal will also be available for temporary access up to six hours at a time. Residents should log-in using the new portal to access the faster internet speeds. Instructional posters will be available in each residence halls, and students can prepare now by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=prbpBAdbSyU\">reviewing this video of how to connect to the upgraded services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The wireless network upgrade will include faster internet speeds enhanced to 150\/50 Mbps with up to 8 devices on the network simultaneously once refresh is complete in each hall. Residents will have a user-based personal area network (PAN) and can connect wireless printers, gamer devices and IoT devices, and these devices should be able to see each other, just like a home network. Users will have an easy PSK (personal share key) for device onboarding.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the service, Apogee continues to offer one click call\/chat for student support and specialized gaming support. If you have any questions or issues with the ResNet by Apogee services, contact their 24\/7\/365 support center at 877-478-8808. They can help you add devices to your account (printers, phones, game consoles, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>If you are experiencing any problems with Apogee Support not resolving your issues, please contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/helpdesk\/\">UMW IT Help Desk<\/a> to let us know. Effective July 1, 2023, these apps will be blocked from UMW networks.<\/p>\n<p>These apps will be restricted on all networks at UMW, including eduroam, UMW-Secure, UMW, and UMW Guest. You will not be able to access these apps and will receive a \u201ccannot connect\u201d message similar to when there\u2019s no internet available. In addition, TikTok, WeChat, etc. may not be used on any university-issued device, regardless of what network is being used at the time. The governor signed the bill in April. The restriction takes effect on July 1, 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will the websites for these applications be blocked too?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, UMW will implement technical controls to limit access to the websites for the apps too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My department or student organization has a TikTok account? What should I do and not do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No posts should be made to these accounts.<\/p>\n<p>For any university-affiliated account, including departmental accounts, student organizations, and employees who have an account related to their role, please cease using the account. You need to delete the app from any state-issued devices. However, please do not delete the account.<\/p>\n<p>Social media managers are advised not to delete accounts, but simply to stop using them &#8211; this will protect the accounts from being spoofed in the future. If your department or organization has follow-up questions about deactivating but not deleting your account, please email <a href=\"mailto:social@umw.edu\">social@umw.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I have a personal TikTok account. Can I still use it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can still access and use TikTok after July 1 provided that these three requirements are met:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The app is on a device you own.<\/li>\n<li>You are using a personal or cellular network that is not owned or managed by a state agency.<\/li>\n<li>You are not using the account for UMW related work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>I have a WeChat account to communicate with friends and family internationally. Can I still use it after July 1?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You are not prohibited from using WeChat on a personal device with a personal data plan. However, you will not be able to use the application over the UMW network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if I\u2019m visiting campus or a vendor working on campus?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have a personal device on a personal data plan, you can access the apps for personal use. However, even if you are visiting campus or just here for a short-time, you will not be able to use the apps while on any UMW network.<\/p>\n<p>No person or entity contracting with UMW shall download or use the applications in their work with UMW, as required by state law.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will this restriction be implemented and enforced?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Information Technology will block access to these apps on university networks. You can make and receive calls (without video) from your computer and mobile devices including your laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Private Network connection, or VPN.\u00a0 This is a special connection allows access to the most secure areas of the UMW network.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Most users do not need VPN access as all student and many employee systems are available via the internet.\u00a0 If you have questions about access and if you need it, please contact the <a title=\"Link to the Help Desk\" href=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/helpdesk\">IT Help Desk<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To provide adequate IT security when using VPN, the following requirements are in place to use this connection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a title=\"VPN Access Request Form\" href=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/connecting\/off-campus-access-umw-network-using-vpn\/vpn-access-request-form\/\">request for VPN access<\/a> must be submitted by the employee and approved by the IT Security office as well as the employee&#8217;s supervisor.<\/li>\n<li>Two-factor authentication must be used when logging in through VPN.<\/li>\n<li>VPN connections to the <strong>UMW internal network<\/strong> are only permitted when using a UMW-owned device.\u00a0 Personally-owned devices are not permitted to make VPN connections to the UMW internal network.<\/li>\n<li>VPN connections to the <strong>Internet ONLY<\/strong> (not the internal network) are permitted on a personally-owned device.<\/li>\n<li>Users assessing the network from off-campus agree to abide by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boarddocs.com\/va\/umw\/Board.nsf\/goto?open&amp;id=8T7SVQ748F30\">Network and Computer Use Policy<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/it-policies\/malicious-code-protection-standard\/\">Malicious Code Protection Standard<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/it-policies\/remote-access-standard\/\">Remote Access Standard<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Systems that REQUIRE a VPN connection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Banner INB (Internet Native Banner)\u00a0 NOTE:\u00a0 Banner SSB does NOT require VPN<\/li>\n<li>Shared network folders (New Share, W drive, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Banner reporting through Report Central<\/li>\n<li>Other specialized or secure systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some systems that DO NOT REQUIRE a VPN connection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UMW employee email using the full Outlook client<\/li>\n<li>Banner SSB (Self Service Banner) used by students and faculty for registration, posting and viewing final grades, advising, etc.<\/li>\n<li>MyUMW, MyTime, Canvas, Outlook Web Access (OWA), Office 365 &#8211; including Make sure that you\u2019re choosing UMW from the drop down list.<\/li>\n<li>Once you\u2019ve done that, go to My Computer.\u00a0 If you\u2019re using a wired connection, you\u2019ll see New-Share.\u00a0 That\u2019s the drive that\u2019s shared with all Faculty and Staff.\u00a0 There should also be a drive for your department.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re using a wireless connection, you\u2019ll have to map to the drive the first time that you access it.\u00a0 To do so:\n<ul>\n<li>Right-click on \u201cComputer\u201d in the menu at the left.<\/li>\n<li>Select MAP NETWORK DRIVE<\/li>\n<li>Choose a drive letter<\/li>\n<li>In the \u201cfolder\u201d box type the following (note upper and lowercase characters must be included as shown):<br \/>\n<strong>\\\\umw-share.umw.local\\New-Share<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Check Reconnect at log in.<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;Finish&#8221; button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Network Drive on a Mac<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To access these areas from a Mac, see the Go menu, and choose Connect to Server.<\/p>\n<p>In the server address bar, type the network address of the drive (note upper and lowercase characters):<br \/>\n<strong>smb:\/\/umw-share.umw.local\/New-Share<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You are asked to authenticate with your Domain credentials- this will be the username and password that you use for e-mail.\u00a0 Click OK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On and Off Campus Access<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shared Drives are accessible on-campus via an Ethernet connection or a connection to UMW-Secured.\u00a0 To access this space from off-campus, you must first establish a <a title=\"Off-Campus Network Access\" href=\"https:\/\/technology.umw.edu\/connecting\/off-campus-access-umw-network-using-vpn\/\">VPN connection<\/a> to campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UMW provides shared servers where individuals and departments can share files for network retrieval.\u00a0 You will hear people refer to these online spaces as the shared drive, New-Share, P Drive (the letter can change, and can be almost any letter).\u00a0 All of these terms refer to the same things.
