Software

You’ll need a number of software packages installed on your computer to make your computing experience at UMW easier. We’ve listed the types of software that you’ll probably need; we’ve also listed the most recent version of the applications that the University provides for each of the University-owned computers. We urge you to consider purchasing the same applications that are used on campus; sharing information with faculty and your peers will be easier.

Word Processing:

PC: MS Office 2007 / 2010 – Word

Spreadsheet:

Presentation:

Note: Microsoft Office software is available at special academic pricing through the University Bookstore.

Virus:

PC: Symantec Anti-Virus or AVG Free
Mac: Symantec Anti-Virus or AVG Free
It’s critical that you install virus protection on your computer immediately and keep it up to date! Virus definitions should be updated regularly (recommended daily), and the application should be set to scan your computer on a regular basis (recommended daily).

Spyware:

It is not a bad idea to have several Spyware removal programs protecting your computer. A popular choice, available free on the web is Ad-Aware. You may also want to intall MalwareBytes and Spybot.

Browser:

PC: Internet Explorer 8 or higher and FireFox
Mac: Safari 1.2 or higher and FireFox

Extra:

You may find that some of your classes require you to use specialized applications; in many instances, the requisite software is provided for your use.
