Open or Close an Existing Document

Files can be opened that are stored on your hard disk, on a floppy or zip disk, or a network space.

To open a document:

  1. Select the Office Button.
  2. Choose Open.
  3. Navigate to the location where the file is saved.
  4. Select the appropriate file.
  5. Click on Open.

To Close a Document:

Closing a document should be accomplished after you are finished working on that particular document.

  1. Go to the Office Button.
  2. Choose Close.
  3. If changes were made since the last time the document was saved, a dialog box will appear asking you if the changes should be saved. Select the appropriate option.

    Choose:

    • Yes to save the changes
    • No to not save the changes, or
    • Cancel to return to your document

Word Extra:

  • You may also close a document by clicking on the X in the upper right corner of the document.
  • Closing a file is not the same as quitting the application.
  • Control + W will close a file.
