Insert Footnotes

Footnotes (placed at the bottom of the page) and Endnotes (placed at the end of a document) are notes that comment on or cite a reference for a designated part of the text. For example, footnotes or endnotes may be used to reference a page number of a source used.

To insert a footnote or an endnote:

  1. In your document, click where you want to insert the reference mark.
  2. Go to the References Tab.
  3. Choose Insert Footnote (or Insert Endnote) from the Footnotes Group.

Word inserts the note number, places the insertion point next to the note number, and moves your cursor to the bottom of the page (or end of the document) where you can type the footnote (or endnote).
  4. Type the note text.
