Adding Illustrations

On the Insert Tab in the Illustrations Group you will see a variety of icons for inserting pictures, clipart, shapes, and other objects.

To add a picture from a file on the computer to the current slide:

1. Click on the Picture icon in Illustrations Group.

2. The Insert Picture dialog box will appear.

3. Navigate to the appropriate file.

4. Select the picture by clicking on it.

5. Click Insert.

The Picture Tools Formatting Ribbon will now appear.

  • You can make adjustments to the picture in the Adjust Group.
  • You can change the style of the picture in the Picture Styles Group.  For example
  • You can rearrange the position of the picture in the Arrange Group.
  • You can adjust the size of the picture in the Size Group.

To add a picture or another type of graphic from ClipArt:

1. Click on the ClipArt icon in the Illustrations Group.

2. The Clip Art Task Bar will appear on the right.

3. Enter your search criteria in the Search for box.

4. Scroll through the ClipArt that is returned from the search

5. When you have selected your ClipArt, click on it and it will be inserted onto the current slide.

The Picture Tools Formatting Ribbon will now appear.  See above for information on what the various groups on this Ribbon can do.

To add a shape to the current slide, click on the down arrow in the Shapes Icon.  The Shapes Selection Box will appear.

1. Select the appropriate shape by clicking on it.  Click on the current slide where you want the shape to appear.

2. To move the shape, roll over the shape with the mouse until you see the cross hairs, then click and drag the shape to the appropriate placement.

3. To make fill color, line color, or alignment adjustments, right-click on the shape and the mini-toolbar appears.  Change the fill color by clicking on the fill bucket and choosing another color.

4. Right-clicking on the shape will also reveal a short menu of options.

5. Click the appropriate command in the menu box to make other adjustments to the shape.

A SmartArt graphic is a visual representation of information— like a diagram.  PowerPoint 2007 offers over 80 different graphical representations. Here are some ways to use one.

  • You can put the main points from a bulleted list into related shapes that don’t follow a strict vertical format, and that you can color for impact and clarity.
  • Or, illustrate a production schedule, as this picture shows, by using a graphical timeline that captures the main milestones.
  • Or show a process, using connected shapes and arrows to make a sequence direct and clear.

To add a SmartArt graphic to the current slide.

1. Click on the SmartArt icon.

2. The “Choose a SmartArt Graphic” box appears.

3. Navigate to the graphic that you need.

4. Click on it and the graphic now appears on the current slide.

5. To make changes to the format of the graphic, right-click on the shape and a short list of options appears.

6. Click on Format Shape and the Format Shape dialog box appears.  Make changes as appropriate.

To add a chart to the current slide.

1. Click on Chart icon.

2. The Insert Chart dialog box appears.

3. Select your chart

4. Click on it and it will appear on the current slide and the screen will split with an Excel spreadsheet appearing on the right.

5. Change the data in the spreadsheet and the chart on your slide will reflect those changes.  When you are finished editing the data, close or save the Excel spreadsheet, whichever is appropriate.
