A word processing application is capable of creating high quality text documents. Microsoft® Word is a powerful word processing application; it is perhaps the most popular word processing application in use today. Using a word processing application enables you to:
- Create a document,
- Store a document electronically on a disk,
- Display a document on a screen,
- Modify a document, and
- Print a document on a printer.
You can easily make changes to a document with a word processing application, without retyping the entire document. Using a word processing application makes it easy to complete many tasks, such as:
- Correct mistakes,
- Delete information,
- Insert a word, sentence, or paragraph in the middle of a document, or
- Move sections of text from one place to another within a document, or between documents.
Most word processing applications support features that enable you to manipulate and format documents in sophisticated ways. Some of the features that you will find in a word processing application include the following:
- File management: Create, delete, move, and search for files.
- Font specifications: Change fonts (size, typeface, styles like bold, underlining, italics).
- Footnotes and cross-references: Automated numbering and placement of footnotes that allow you to easily cross-reference sections of the document.
- Graphics: Embed (and perhaps create) illustrations and graphs into a document.
- Headers, footers, and page numbering: Specify customized headers and footers that will be placed at the top and bottom of every page. The word processing application automatically keeps track of page numbers so that the correct number appears on each page.
- Layout: Specify different margins and various methods for indenting paragraphs within a single document.
- Spell checker: Check the spelling of words.
- Tables of contents and indexes: Create a table of contents and index based on special codes in the document.
- Thesaurus: Search for synonyms.
- Multiple documents: Edit two or more documents at the same time.
- WYSIWYG: What you see is what you get; a document appears on the display screen exactly as it will look when printed.
