Select and Edit Data

To efficiently manipulate a worksheet you will need to understand how to select a block of cells, a column or row, or the entire worksheet.

To select a contiguous block of cells:

  • Place the mouse in first cell to be selected (in this example, cell B3).
  • Click and drag to the last cell (cell D7).

To select a column or row:

  • Click on the letter of the column or the number of the row.
  • To select multiple columns/rows, drag across the range to select.

To select a noncontiguous block of cells:

  • Click on the first cell.
  • Move to each cell or group of cells to be selected and hold the control key down while clicking the left mouse button.

To select the entire worksheet:

  • Point to the <> that is just above the first row indicator (1) and to the left of the first column indicator (A).
  • Click the left mouse button.

To edit text, numbers or formulas:

  • Double-click the cell containing the data.
  • Highlight the data to edit.
  • Type the corrected data into the cell.
  • Press Enter.
