A virtual private network (VPN) connection is a connection between your off-campus computer and the University network to provide you with secure access to the University’s resources (Banner, the shared drive, and other). UMW uses the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client to provide this access. To install this client:
- Go to https://vpn1.umw.edu. NOTE: This only works if you are off-campus.
- Sign in, entering your UMW NetID and Active Directory password.

- The AnyConnect VPN Client will attempt to install and connect automatically.
If the installation fails, select download and install manually:
- You will need to download the VPN Client. Choose the client based on your version of MacOSX. You will be prompted to enter your UMW NetID and Active Directory password. Save the files to your desktop — do not run it remotely.
- Navigate to your desktop and double click on the VPN Client installer file first.
- Complete the install, and navigate to your Applications folder to find the “VPN” application and drag the icon to your dock.
- Once in the dock, click on the VPN icon.
- The VPN client will launch. You will see a blank window at first because no profiles have been created. Click the icon for “import” on the top toolbar.
- Navigate to the VPN Profile file (the “.pcf” file) on your desktop and click “OK.” This will import the necessary information for use of the UMW VPN. When this import is done, there should be one profile in the Client window.
- To connect, highlight the UMW VPN profile, and click “connect” on the toolbar at the upper left.
- You will be prompted for your NetID and Active Directory Password. Enter it, and click “Connect”. It should take about 5 seconds to connect.
- Hide the VPN window while the VPN is in use. To disconnect, open the window and click “Disconnect.” You may then close the VPN client.
