Windows Update

For the computer to work correctly on the UMW network, ALL Windows Updates must be installed.  The Microsoft Windows Updates Web site provides updates for Windows operating system software and Windows-based hardware.

If you turn on Automatic Updates, Windows Update can deliver high priority updates to your computer as they become available. You can decide when and how updates are installed.

Note: In order to accomplish any of these instructions you must be logged into an administrative account.

Updates on Windows Based Systems

For Windows XP:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on the Tools option in the menu bar that runs along the top of the Internet Explorer window.
  3. In the dropdown from the Tools option, click on Windows Update.
  4. After clicking on Windows Update, the web browser will take the user to a Windows Update webpage. When the option is presented to the user, click on the Express update button.
  5. After processing, the Webpage will display a list of all of the updates for the computer. By clicking on the Review Updates button and the Install button, the updates will be downloaded and installed.

For Windows 7:

  1. Click on the Windows button in the lower left hand corner of your desktop.
  2. Type in the search box Windows Update and press Enter.
  3. Click on the Check for updates link in the top left of the window.
  4. If any updates are available, they can be reviewed and then click on the Install Updates button.

Turn on Automatic Updates on Windows Based Machines

For Windows XP:

  1. Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your desktop.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Click on Security Center.
  4. Click on Automatic Updates in the lower middle of the screen of the window.
  5. Select the Automatic radio button from the options in the window presented.
  6. Click Ok on all windows and close Control Panel.

For Windows 7

  1. Click on the Windows button in the lower left hand corner of your desktop.
  2. Type in the search box Windows Update and press Enter.
  3. Click on the Change settings link in the top left of the window.
  4. Ensure that Install updates automatically selection is selected in the dropdown under the Important Updates section.
