Set Your Wireless Connection Type

Verifying DHCP and/or Obtain an IP Address Automatically

Note: In order to accomplish any of these instructions you must be logged into an administrative account.

For Windows XP:

  • Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your desktop.
  • Click on Control Panel.
  • If you see about 10 icons on the screen, click on Network and Internet Connections and then click on Network Connections in the lower right hand of the window.
  • If you see about 20 or so icons on the screen, click on the icon that says Network Connections.
  • Right click on the icon of the network connection of the wireless adapter and select Properties. This icon is most likely called Wireless Network Connection.
  • In the Window that pops up, select the item from the list that says Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
  • Ensure that the radio buttons in the Properties window are set to Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Click OK on all windows and close Control Panel.

For Windows 7:

  • Click on the Windows button in the lower left hand corner of your desktop.
  • Type in the search box Network and Sharing Center and press Enter.
  • Click on the Change adapter settings link in the top left of the window.
  • Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and select Properties.
  • Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) item from the list in the center of the window and click on the Properties button.
  • Ensure that the radio buttons in the Properties window are set to Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Click OK on all windows and close Network and Sharing Center.

For OS X:

  • Go to the Apple in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
  • Select System Preferences.
  • Double-click Network.
  • Choose the network connection that you are using.
  • Click the Advance Button.
  • Choose Ethernet.
  • Configure it for Automatically.
